It’s Spring. And that means spring cleaning and maintenance!
Home maintenance can feel like a daunting chore — particularly for a new homeowner, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. If you love your home, it will love you back. Just as with every home, your condominium requires a little bit of love and attention to get ready for the warmer weather.
What are the benefits of performing spring maintenance on my home/condo?
Is all this cleaning and work really worth it? In short, yes! From protecting your investment to identifying minor issues before they become major repairs, maintaining your home in the spring has many benefits:
- Protects your home—seasonal maintenance helps defend against unpredictable weather and other threats such as invasive wildlife.
- Saves you time—smaller, frequent cleaning sessions mean it takes less time to maintain your property with the changing seasons.
- Maintains the resale value of your home—keeping up with your home’s needs, landscaping and some renovations help with your investment.
With this in mind, we have put together a few tips to get you ready for the return of warmer days and enjoying this season.
3 simple spring maintenance tips for CONDOS
1. Clean Balcony Tracks
Along the edge of your balcony, is a finishing strip of metal that should be checked each spring. Cleaning out any debris that may have become lodged between your balcony door and the metal threshold will prevent water from entering your suite and ensure it drains away from your home.
2. Wash your Windows
Let the sunshine in! Washing the inside of the windows and getting rid of any dust on the blinds will not only clear the air for allergy sensitivities, but the brighter windows will also make you feel better as well. Get your window treatments dry cleaned or wash them yourself to remove any dirt buildup.
Also, open as many windows as possible to let fresh air sweep through your space for a few hours to make your living area a healthier space.
TIP:
You can also add plants to your space to help you purify the air.
Florist’s chrysanthemums or “mums” are ranked the highest for air purification. They’re shown to eliminate common toxins as well as ammonia
3. Change Your Fan Filters
Your fan filters should be changed about every 3 months, depending on your lifestyle. You may need to change your filter more frequently if you smoke, have pets or have environmental sensitivities.

3 simple spring maintenance tips for homes
1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Given the option, few of us would volunteer to spend a Sunday on a ladder pulling leaves out of a gutter. But when your home is your biggest investment, as it is for most, maintaining it is a must. Clean your eavestroughs and check that they are not loose or leaky. Also, make sure your downspout extends at least 1.5 metres away (five feet) from your home, so the water drains away from the building to minimize the risk of a wet basement.
2. Inspect Windows and Doors
Fix or replace the screens on windows and doors to keep bugs and animals from entering your home. This is also a good time to wash your windows. Clean the tracts and seals with a vacuum attachment or a soft brush before you start washing the panes.
3. Begin Spring Landscaping
Goodbye snow blower, hello lawnmower. Once the snow has completely melted, undertake spring landscape maintenance and, if necessary, fertilize young trees. To encourage a lush lawn during summer, fertilize the grass now and re-sow to replace dead patches of grass.
